Why can’t I export Claude Desktop chat here?
Download Claude conversations is a Chrome content script for claude.ai. Claude Desktop is a standalone Mac/Windows app. There is no extension toolbar in that window, so the orange button never appears. Installing the Chrome listing while Desktop is open does nothing to Desktop.
Chrome extensions run against pages that match host permissions. This listing matches claude.ai conversation pages. Claude Desktop is not a claude.ai tab. You cannot “Add to Chrome” inside the Desktop app. Version 1.13.0 (September 2026) still has no Desktop plugin, menu-bar helper, or file reader for the Desktop install folder.
Hard limit. You cannot export Claude Desktop chat with this Chrome extension from inside Desktop. If you need Markdown, JSON, text, XML, or PNG from our widget, leave Desktop, open https://claude.ai in Chrome, and open the conversation there.
People search export Claude Desktop chat because the products share a brand. Search results mix Desktop, claude.ai, and Claude Code. The files are not interchangeable. A Desktop screenshot is not a Markdown export. A Code JSONL log is not a claude.ai thread. This page exists so that mismatch is explicit.

Download Claude conversations is a Chrome content script for claude.ai. There is no Desktop plugin in version 1.13.0, and we will not pretend the orange button appears in that app window.
How do I export Claude Desktop chat via claude.ai?
Many Desktop sessions use the same Claude account as the web. If the thread is in your claude.ai history, open it in Chrome and use Download Claude conversations. That is the only way this extension helps you export Claude Desktop chat: the chat must load on claude.ai first.
- Quit guessing in Desktop. Open https://claude.ai in Chrome and sign in with the same account.
- Find the conversation in web history. If it is missing, skip to copy-paste or Export data — we cannot pull a chat Chrome never loaded.
- Click the orange button. Choose Markdown, JSON, plain text, XML, or PNG. Click Export.
- For many synced threads, open View and Download All Conversations and run Export All.

Google sign-in on first web export counts the 3 free exports and restores Pro at $3.99/mo or $26.99/yr. That quota applies to claude.ai files only. Desktop copy-paste does not spend our quota because it never touches the extension. Paddle bills Pro; we never see card numbers.
Sync is Anthropic’s behavior, not ours. If Desktop shows a chat that claude.ai does not, this Chrome extension cannot invent it. Wait, refresh claude.ai, or use copy-paste / official ZIP. We do not read Desktop’s local database. How the web exporter works once the tab exists: how it works.

Can I export Claude Desktop chat by copy-paste?
Yes. Select text in Claude Desktop and paste it into a document. That is the honest fallback when the thread does not show on claude.ai. You lose fenced-code fidelity, artifact layouts, thinking toggles, and bulk Export All. Fine for a short answer; painful for a long coding thread.
Copy-paste from Desktop is why the Chrome extension exists on claude.ai: the web widget keeps language tags, tables, and Original/Inline/Nested/Flat artifacts. Desktop has none of those export controls from us. If you can move the same conversation to claude.ai, stop copy-pasting and use Download Claude conversations there.
Screenshots of Claude Desktop are another fallback. They are pictures, not Markdown. They do not count as export Claude Desktop chat in the sense of a reusable file. PNG from our extension is also a picture, but it is generated only after the chat is open on claude.ai. Do not expect that PNG from the Desktop window.
Does Export data cover Claude Desktop chats?
Anthropic’s Settings → Privacy → Export data emails a JSON ZIP tied to the Claude account, not to which window you typed in. If a Desktop conversation is stored on that account, it can appear. Treat the ZIP as backup, not as Markdown from this extension.

Do not confuse that ZIP with bulk Export All on our browse page. Export All writes separate files you select on claude.ai, immediately, in the format you pick, and each file spends one of 3 free exports (or Pro). Official Export data does not use our quota. Desktop-only chats that never synced may still be absent from both.

Is Claude Desktop the same as Claude Code?
No. Claude Desktop is the chat app. Claude Code is the terminal coding agent with /export and JSONL transcripts. Searching export Claude Desktop chat for an IDE terminal is the wrong product. This Chrome extension does not run in either surface.
If your “desktop” meant VS Code or a terminal on the desktop, follow Claude Code export. If you meant the Anthropic Desktop chat app, stay on this page. Mixing the two wastes time: JSONL on disk is not an orange button, and Desktop copy-paste is not /export.

We do not ship a Claude Desktop plugin, a menu-bar app, or an “export from Desktop” toggle. We do not read files off your Mac or Windows Claude Desktop install. We do not replace Claude Code /export. Those sentences are the product boundary for export Claude Desktop chat in 1.13.0.
