The extension is a Chrome content script. It reads the conversation already loaded in your logged-in claude.ai session. It does not call a separate Anthropic API with its own credentials, and it does not upload the thread to our servers to generate the file.
- Install Download Claude conversations from the Chrome Web Store (Chromium browsers that load Chrome extensions also work).

Print still has a place: a one-off attachment that should look exactly like the claude.ai screen. Official Export data still has a place: leaving a company, a legal hold, or a belt-and-suspenders backup. Neither replaces a Markdown file you will edit next week.

After install, Chrome does not always inject a content script into tabs that were already open. Close the claude.ai tab or hard-reload it. If you use multiple profiles, the extension must be installed in the profile that is logged into Anthropic.
Team and Enterprise workspaces work if you can open the conversation in the browser. The extension reads the page, not a plan tier. If the org blocks Chrome extensions, IT has to allow this one; we cannot bypass that policy from the website.

Incomplete file: the conversation had not finished streaming, or older turns were still virtualized off-screen. Wait for the assistant to finish. Scroll toward the start of a long thread so claude.ai hydrates those nodes, then export again. A repeat Markdown or JSON export costs nothing. A repeat PDF uses another of the 3 daily slots on the free plan — one reason to confirm the thread is fully loaded first.
Wrong file type: last-used format was still selected. Wrong account: you signed into Google with a different address than the one that holds Pro. Pro restore is tied to that Google email, not to the Anthropic login, and not to the Chrome profile name.
Mobile browsers do not run this extension. There is no iOS or Android app. Safari on a phone can print; it cannot show the orange button. For a reusable file, open the same chat in desktop Chrome.
Does this download a Claude chat from Claude Code?
Only from Claude Code on the web. Sessions at claude.ai/code open in Chrome, so Download Claude conversations exports them like any chat. A local Claude Code terminal session is different. Inside an active Claude Code session, type /export. Anthropic’s CLI opens a menu to copy the transcript or save a plain-text file. Pass a filename to skip the menu. That transcript is rendered text for a person to read, not this extension’s Markdown, JSON, or PDF. Full paths: Claude Code export.
JSONL on disk is the internal log. The schema can change between Claude Code versions. Anthropic’s own docs tell you to prefer /export or script interfaces over parsing JSONL. We do not wrap that CLI. We do not read ~/.claude.
