PNG is the one format here that's a picture, not a text file. When you download Claude chat as PNG with Download Claude conversations, you get a visual snapshot of the thread — useful for sharing a screenshot-style image, not for editing or searching the text afterward.

When to pick PNG

A claude chat screenshot as PNG is the right call when you want to drop a conversation straight into a slide deck, a chat app, or a social post — somewhere an image is easier to use than a formatted document. It's not the right choice if you need to edit, search, or copy the text later; for that, use Markdown or plain text instead. Claude Conversation Downloader doesn't try to make PNG do both jobs — it's a snapshot format, on purpose.

PNG is not PDF

How to select it

Open the conversation, click the orange export button, choose PNG from the format dropdown, click Export. The same option exists on Export All from the bulk browse page if you want image snapshots of several conversations at once. Whether it's one chat or a batch, Download Claude conversations renders the image in your browser before handing it to Chrome's download.

What you get

A single image capturing the visible conversation content. Unlike Markdown or JSON, a PNG export doesn't carry structured data forward — no code you can copy cleanly, no message tree to parse. It's a snapshot, by design, closer in spirit to a screenshot than to a document.
